Behind every successful company is a set of core values earnestly embraced by all stakeholders, and AusSteel is no different.
For AusSteel, those core values look like this:
Efficiency
Simplicity
Growth
Authenticity
Respect
Let’s look a little closer at each of the values that contribute to the company’s ongoing success, with President and CEO, Darren Onley.
Efficiency
“Efficiency is a big part of what we do and what we create here at AusSteel,” explains Darren. “On a company level, efficiency really emphasizes the importance of optimizing processes and workflows to achieve maximum productivity with minimal waste of resources. It also encourages AusSteel employees to seek innovative ways to streamline tasks and operations – something we really encourage and celebrate.” Darren notes that a focus on (and commitment to) efficiency reflects AusSteel’s commitment to delivering truly high-quality results in a timely and resource-effective manner.
Simplicity
“To me, simplicity embodies clarity and straightforwardness in everything we do; communication, processes, and products. I believe simplicity is something we can all appreciate in today’s world – with the ultimate goal being the elimination of unnecessary complexities that have the potential to hinder understanding and efficiency,” Darren notes. Taking this a step further, Darren explains that prioritising simplicity paves the way for more user-friendly experiences for both internal and external stakeholders, something that is well-received and appreciated by AusSteel’s partners and customers alike.
Growth (Personal and Business)
“Growth is a core value for both individuals and the business as a whole, meaning we focus on continuous improvement on both fronts. This could look like encouraging our team to pursue personal development, acquire new skills, and take on challenges that foster professional and personal growth,” says Darren. “And yet, on a company level, our core value of ‘Growth’ reflects a commitment to ongoing development and expansion of the company.” With facilities now in three key locations – Cameron Park (Newcastle – Northern NSW), Goulburn (Southern Tablelands of NSW), and Crestmead (Brisbane, QLD) – growth is in constant motion at AusSteel.
Authenticity
“This is a big one for us,” Darren explains. “At AusSteel, we are known for our authenticity and our genuine relationships with customers, partners, and colleagues. This core value really emphasizes honesty, transparency, and sincerity in all interactions, both internally and externally. We encourage all employees to be true to themselves and to represent the company with integrity.”
Respect
“Our final core value – respect – goes hand in hand with authenticity. It is incredibly important to me that our team treats our partners, customers, and each other with consideration, dignity, and courtesy. This is one of the many elements that allows us to maintain an inclusive and diverse workplace where everyone feels heard and valued.” Darren adds that a strong focus on respect also encourages empathy and understanding in communication and collaboration.
Darren explains that these core values collectively shape the culture of AusSteel, not only influencing how employees interact with one another and with stakeholders, but also guiding them in making decisions, and ultimately paving the way for contributing to the company’s success. And at the end of the day, a team guided by such strong values is a team well-equipped to meet challenges head-on as well as embracing and celebrating AusSteel’s collective success.
