Cold-formed steel still a hot topic of research

The world of steel is constantly evolving – with innovation at the forefront of the industry. When it comes to cold-formed light gauge steel – the steel we work with here at AusSteel – focus areas for research on innovation are abundant. In both Australia and abroad, researchers are looking at even more ways to get the best out of this high performing material.

Prefabrication methods: ‘Flat Pack’ systems
One interesting and yet natural extension of cold-formed light gauge steel applications is that of prefabricated ‘flat pack’ style systems. An example of this is improving flooring and wall systems; research is currently underway to better design and manufacture cassette-style systems for flooring and walls in particular.

Mid-rise construction
Innovation in design and structural systems when using cold-formed light gauge steel for mid-rise construction is another hot research area at the moment. Researchers are looking at new ways to further increase the height to which structures supported by light gauge steel can be built. Similarly, pushing the current limitations on internal zones to create wider, more open spaces in light gauge steel structures.

Better performance
Steel structures are already renowned for their resistance to fire, however, steel is still inevitably weakened by fire. Research into how this could be improved further is ongoing. Similarly, researchers are working on innovative approaches to noise reduction in light-gauge steel structures, to lessen the need for soundproofing.

Connections and fasteners
Research goes as far as to look at innovative new approaches to connection systems. We’re seeing further research and innovative results in systems such as hybrid connection models – for light gauge and hot rolled components – as well as quick-connect snap style fasteners.

In all of our factories, whether it be Brisbane QLD, Newcastle NSW, or the Southern Tablelands of NSW, we are working tirelessly on our own innovative approaches to manufacturing our steel frames and trusses. If you’re looking at building a new home or perhaps a new commercial structure, get in touch to find out how AusSteel’s #ultimatebuildingsystem can work for you.

Are you a home or commercial builder looking to partner with a leading steel frame and truss manufacturer? We’d love to hear from you also!
